The Magnetic Observatory at Trivandrum was started in
1957 as a part of India's participation in the International
Geophysical Year (IGY) program. The observatory commenced
functioning from October 1957. Importance of the observatory
was its position, being near to the dip equator to the
North of Trivandrum until 1984, and currently to the
south. It was situated in the compound of aquarium of
the Marine Biology Section of the Kerala University.
The Observatory was close to the sea-coast, being about
250 meters away from Arabian sea-coast. This observatory
was closed down in October 1999 due to technical reasons.
