This Magnetic Observatory was started in January 1949 keeping in the view of growing importance of geomagnetic observations in relation to solar phenomena and because of the proximity of Kodaikanal to the magnetic equator. This Observatory is situated in the grounds of Astronomical Observatory. It is functioning under the control of the Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Banglore. IIG is publishing the data from 1957 onwards.
