major activities of the Institute are divided in three main
Research Areas.

Magnetic
Observatory Network
IIG
operates a network of Ten Magnetic Observatories in the Indian
longitude chain encompassing the stations from Magnetic equator
to the location of the focal latitude of the low latitude
Sq current system. Variations in the geomagnetic field are
recorded continuously at these observatories, which extend
from dip equator to the northernmost latitude of India. These
observatories are also covering both the west and east coasts.
The data and records generated at all these observatories
are collected at the Observatory & Data Analysis ( ODA
) division stationed at the Headquarter in Navi Mumbai.
Antarctic Program :-
IIG has been an integral part of the National Antarctic Program
right through its inception. Antarctic Geomagnetism has special
importance for India in the sense that Maitri (MAI) and Dakshin
Gangotri (DG) (both located at about 700 South,
120 East geographic) are the only locations where
India can carry out research on high-latitude geomagnetism.
